The Nurses Assistance Program (NAP) was created to assist the Board of Nursing in protecting the public. The incidence of chemical dependency in nurses is estimated at 10% of all working nurses. Montana has approximately 14,000 nurses. This means that at some point in their career, 1400 Montana nurses will have a problem with substance abuse. NAP provides statewide professional assistance in identification, intervention, referral, and monitoring nurses. NAP's goal is to ensure safe nursing care throughout Montana by providing direct assistance to nurses with substance abuse problems.
The objectives of the NAP are:
A nurse may enter the NAP program by self-referral, Board referral, employer referral, Employee Assistance Program, or other source of referral. On some occasions, the Board requires NAP participation as part of a stipulated agreement. This is referred to as Disciplinary NAP. If the Board has not required enrollment, the participation is considered Non-Disciplinary NAP.
The NAP program screens and facilitates referral to testing, counseling, support groups and treatment as appropriate. The NAP uses state of the art monitoring as well as confidential reporting and record keeping. Most nurses enrolled in the NAP continue to work in nursing. The NAP closely monitors each nurse to insure compliance with the program requirements. Nurses participating in the NAP are actively working on recovery for substance abuse. With participation in the NAP, recovering nurses can continue to contribute to the profession.
