Quarterly Reports

Announcements

A change has been made in how the participants in the Disciplinary tract of the NAP are to report on a quarterly basis. The process will now require participants to report to the MT. Bon directly when filing their self reports and employer reports. (Counselor reports and support group logs need not be included to the BON) Copies of all reports will need to be sent to the NAP program and these reports will still have a due date of the 15th. Also the board is requiring that the copy that is sent to them be an original. The non disciplinary people however, are still to report directly to the NAP program.

In summary; Disciplinary Tract Participants:

1. Send original employer and self reports to the Board of Nursing. P.O. Box 200513, Helena 59620-0573 Attn: Dustin Johnson

2. Send copies of the above to the NAP office, and include your support group logs.

NON-Disciplinary Tract Participants send all reports directly to NAP as per usual.

If there are any questions, PLEASE CALL the NAP office.

NAP Info

The Nurses Assistance Program (NAP) was created to assist the Board of Nursing in protecting the public. The incidence of chemical dependency in nurses is estimated at 10% of all working nurses. Montana has approximately 14,000 nurses. This means that at some point in their career, 1400 Montana nurses will have a problem with substance abuse. NAP provides statewide professional assistance in identification, intervention, referral, and monitoring nurses. NAP's goal is to ensure safe nursing care throughout Montana by providing direct assistance to nurses with substance abuse problems.

The objectives of the NAP are:

  1. To ensure public health and safety by closely monitoring nurses with substance abuse problems.
  2. To provide immediate assistance to nurses who have been identified as having a substance abuse problem thus decreasing the time between identification and entry into a recovery program.
  3. To provide a voluntary alternative to the traditional disciplinary process.
  4. To provide professional, confidential assistance to nurses in need of treatment and aftercare.
  5. To provide information and assistance to individuals and organizations on substance abuse issues.

A nurse may enter the NAP program by self-referral, Board referral, employer referral, Employee Assistance Program, or other source of referral. On some occasions, the Board requires NAP participation as part of a stipulated agreement. This is referred to as Disciplinary NAP. If the Board has not required enrollment, the participation is considered Non-Disciplinary NAP.

The NAP program screens and facilitates referral to testing, counseling, support groups and treatment as appropriate. The NAP uses state of the art monitoring as well as confidential reporting and record keeping. Most nurses enrolled in the NAP continue to work in nursing. The NAP closely monitors each nurse to insure compliance with the program requirements. Nurses participating in the NAP are actively working on recovery for substance abuse. With participation in the NAP, recovering nurses can continue to contribute to the profession.
